Growing pains

What is it?
Generalised pain in the legs affecting otherwise healthy children. The diagnosis is made by exclusion (after ruling out all other possible causes). It is characterised by intermittent pain only in the muscles of both legs during night.

What causes it?
There are several supposed causes of growing pains which include:

  • biomechanical/postural factors (eg flat feet, knock knees)
  • overuse of muscles in highly active kids leading to fatigue
  • lower pain tolerance/emotional factors
  • family history

What can be done about it?
Once the diagnosis has been confirmed there are a number of conservative treatment options that one of our podiatrists will guide you through.

If this is failing to manage the symptoms, in shoe wedges or orthotics may be prescribed to address any biomechanical factors.
