Heel pain

What is it?
Also known as ‘heel spurs’ or plantar fasciitis, this condition is debilitating and actually quite common. You may have been putting up with pain for years, or only just stirred it up recently. Whatever the cause, at Podiatry on Williamson we are committed to bringing you back to full foot health.

What causes it?
Due to excessive pulling or stretching of the plantar fascia on the heel this area can become painful. It is an overuse injury to the base of the heel, where the plantar fascia attaches into the heel bone. The plantar fascia becomes inflamed and then often leads to micro-tears or degeneration of the tissue if the cause is not addressed.

What does it feel like?
The pain is gradual in onset and commonly felt on the base of the heel towards the inside. It can range from a dull ache to a sharp pain, typically worse in the morning or after getting up from sitting/lying down. To begin with it may improve with activity but as the condition worsens it may be aggravated by any weight-bearing.

Who gets it?
While not one exact cause exists, there are several risk factors for developing this condition including:

  • flat arched feet due to excessive strain on the arch
  • high body mass index (BMI)
  • recent increase in training/running
  • extended wearing of poor/worn footwear
  • tight calf muscles and reduced ankle movement

What can I do about it?
Our podiatrists are experienced in managing this painful condition with a range of treatment modalities at their disposal.

Shockwave therapy and custom foot orthotics are just two of the options available.

Due to the persistent nature of plantar fasciitis, symptomatic relief may take some weeks to achieve and will require committed participation by the patient in following the prescribed treatment plan.

After being assessed by one of our podiatrists you will be recommended the most suitable treatment plan tailored specifically to your situation.
